The Lotus Petals
Each petal of the lotus flower represents each value characterised by the acronym ‘DEIJB’. Together, the petals form a resilient bloom, signifying the interconnectedness between each of the values (diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging) and their interwoven nature, whereby they are each fundamental to safeguarding and upholding the other. Together, they secure each value by ensuring that diversity is in the company of equitable approaches, inclusive practices, that foster belonging and justice.
The Scales of Justice
Justice is not just an abstract concept but a tangible goal we strive to achieve through the work we do. The scales embedded in our logo are a powerful reminder of the importance of transparency of policies, processes, and substantive outcomes in evaluating progress towards justice. They also remind us of the interconnectedness between principles of equity and redress. These require looking to the past to understand and inform equitable policies to redress past injustices and to establish firm foundations that are fair and inclusive. The scales are a critical reminder of the need to strive towards continuous improvement and of our dedication to the fight against systemic inequities.
The Hands
The hands cradling the lotus flower reflect the DEIJB Lab’s commitment to centre, support and nurture the diverse individuals and communities whose lived experiences and histories inform and inspire the core of the Lab’s work. They strive to protect the authenticity and honour the voices of groups and communities so often misunderstood and unheard.
The Encircling Figures
At the heart of our work lies the belief that love and compassion are the cornerstones of inclusion, belonging, healing and justice. The handholding outlines of humanse figures symbolise the unity and collective strength that drive our efforts in fostering a community where everyone belongs while at the same time, recognising the unique expertise, voice, value added and contributions of individuals and communities they belong to in advancing this work. The interlocking arms further signify the intricate ways in which all individuals and communities and the lives we experience together are deeply intertwined. Any break in these links will invariably impact the whole - and thereby undermine the sturdiness that comes from our collective strength when we support each other. Thus, our vision must be inclusive, holistic and stem from a space of deep understanding and love.
