What is the DEIJB Lab?
Harmful unconscious biases and practices of exclusion in education have detrimental effects on children's learning and whole person development. These perpetuate the divisions we see globally and locally along the lines of race, religion, gender, disability, sexuality, caste, and other intersecting distinctions. With the widespread prevalence of harmful, negative stereotypes and the dangers of leaving these messages unaddressed, it is incumbent on all of us as educators and school leaders to work deliberately and intentionally towards cultivating learning spaces that are free from prejudice and exclusion, to build inclusive schools that are welcoming and facilitate belonging and justice for all.
The primary objectives of the DEIJB Lab are to:
Raise Awareness
of the systemic nature, prevalence and widespread and detrimental effects of overt, subtle, and implicit discrimination and exclusion in educational settings as well as their long-term, systemic impact.
Design context-specific
solutions to influence positive change through early intervention at a systemic level to cultivate safe and productive spaces for learning for all children, with a particular focus on achieving equity, inclusion, justice and belonging. This lays the foundation for all children to thrive in their key developmental stages, ensuring a strong foundation for a society that is not only diverse but also, equitable, inclusive and fosters opportunities for justice and belonging.
